Life at EPS: Zahir Abdi

Jul 12, 2018

What area of EPS do you work in?

I work as a Software Engineer for one of the teams responsible for supply and revenue optimization.

What do you enjoy most about working at EPS?

I enjoy working with a lot of smart and fun folks here and most importantly, there's a lot of respect and trust. I still remember my first 6 months in to my role, having an impromptu game of table tennis with the Expedia CEO and CFO! We work on projects that are having an impact across the business and it's motivating to see that. We have opportunities to explore and work with new technologies such as Kotlin and there's always something to learn every day. I also get the opportunity to take some time out of my day to day job to attend tech conferences and this is encouraged.

Tell us about a project you are most proud of and why?

Since joining EPS, I’ve worked on a couple of projects but I’m most proud of working on our next generation property admin tool and service. This project has enabled the supply team to control partner's access to our inventory in many ways that they were not able to before. Giving controlled power and flexibility to the supply team to manage access to inventory has helped the business and it's rewarding being a part of that journey.

Tell us about a person who has supported your development? And how?

I couldn't just name a single person as a number of people have supported me with my development here at EPS. My manager Adrian has built an environment and team where I am able to develop and grow within my role and has been very important to my personal development here. Another colleague Navid, has been a good technical source of advice and has helped me build up a lot of my tech knowledge across EPS. My director Carlos has been a solid source to learn from, in terms of his experience and awareness.

How does EPS support your work/life balance?

Having the opportunity to work reasonably flexible hours has helped in maintaining a reasonably healthy work/life balance. The generous travel and wellness reimbursement benefits also helps in pursuing activities outside of work. For example, I have recently used the wellness allowance to pursue playing a new sport – Dodgeball!

What is your most memorable travel experience?

My most memorable travel experience has to be my summer trip to Canada last year. I came across the Canadian rockies whilst watching a documentary a few years ago. It had been on my travel list for a while and being able to hike next to Lake Louise and spend the day kayaking at Emerald Lake was an incredible experience!
